Hardened grease in the pipes

Cooking grease solidifies on the pipe walls. Chemical products do not dissolve old deposits.

Long kitchen pipe run

The kitchen is often far from the main stack. A domestic drain snake (3m) cannot reach a blockage located 5-10m away.

Why does my kitchen sink keep getting blocked?

A sink that frequently gets blocked is usually caused by the build-up of cooking grease and food residue in the trap and pipe. Grease solidifies on the pipe walls as it cools, gradually reducing the diameter until a complete blockage forms.

The 3 main causes of a sink that keeps blocking:

1. Cooking grease

Even liquid when hot, it becomes solid as it cools in the pipes. It accumulates on the walls, reducing the passage.

2. Starch and carbohydrates

Pasta, rice, mashed potato form a sticky paste in the pipe when mixed with water.

3. Washing-up liquid + limescale

Soap accumulates and combines with limescale to form a hard, stubborn deposit on the pipe walls.

Lasting solution: Our high-pressure hydro jetting thoroughly cleans the pipe walls to prevent recurrence.

How can I unblock a sink without removing the trap?

To unblock a sink without removing the trap, pour 1/2 cup of bicarbonate of soda into the drain followed by 1 cup of warm white vinegar. Leave to fizz for 30 minutes then rinse with boiling water. This natural method dissolves grease and organic residue.

Methods without removing the trap:

Bicarbonate + vinegar (recommended)

Remove standing water. Pour 1/2 cup of bicarbonate of soda, then 1 cup of warm white vinegar. Leave to work for 30 minutes. Rinse with boiling water.

Boiling water + salt

Pour 1/2 cup of coarse salt into the drain, followed by 2 litres of boiling water. The abrasive salt loosens greasy deposits.

Drain snake

Insert a manual drain snake into the opening, turn to catch hair and debris, withdraw slowly.

If water takes more than 10 seconds to drain after these methods, the trap needs to be removed for a full clean.

Water from my sink backs up into the other basin — what should I do?

If water backs up into the other basin of your sink, this indicates a blockage in the shared trap or the pipe just downstream. The problem is not in the sink itself but in the outflow pipe. Remove the trap for cleaning or call a professional.

This phenomenon indicates precisely where the blockage is located:

  • Water backing up into the other basin = Blockage in the trap or just after
  • Water backing up slowly = Beginning of a partial obstruction
  • Water standing in both basins = Blockage further down the pipe

Immediate solution:

  • Place a bucket under the sink
  • Unscrew the trap (by hand or with a spanner)
  • Clean it with hot soapy water
  • Check that the rubber seal is in good condition
  • Reassemble without over-tightening

If the problem persists after cleaning the trap, the blockage is deeper and requires a professional electric drain snake.

How can I prevent my kitchen sink from getting blocked again?

To prevent sink blockages, fit a strainer over the drain to catch food residue, never pour hot grease down the sink, and regularly rinse with boiling water and bicarbonate of soda. These simple habits prevent 90% of blockages.

Our prevention tips for healthy pipes:

1. Strainer is essential

The best protection. Empty it into the bin after each use, not into the sink.

2. No grease down the sink

Pour cooking grease into a bottle or jar. Even when liquid, it solidifies in the pipes.

3. Weekly maintenance

Pour 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda + hot water once a week to degrease naturally.

4. Rinse after washing up

Run hot water for 30 seconds after washing up to flush away soap residue.

If slow drainage persists, a professional hydro jetting treatment clears the deposits built up on the pipe walls.
