Frequently asked questions about drain unblocking

Expertise and advice for your main drains

How much does main drain unblocking cost in Luxembourg?

Main drain unblocking in Luxembourg costs €249 excl. VAT for electric drain snake, or €349 excl. VAT for high-pressure hydro jetting. The choice depends on the nature of the blockage (object or grease/limescale) and its location in the pipe.

Our two packages for main drains:

€249 excl. VAT — Electric drain snake

For blockages caused by objects, roots, or paper build-up. Mechanical intervention with CCTV check.

€349 excl. VAT — Hydro jetting

For grease, limescale or sludge deposits. High-pressure cleaning that restores the full diameter of the pipe.

Both packages include: CCTV diagnosis, intervention, watertightness test, and 1-month guarantee.

How do I know if my main drain is blocked?

Your main drain is likely blocked if several fixtures are affected at the same time (toilet, washbasin, shower), if water backs up in other rooms when you flush, or if you hear gurgling in the pipes. These signs indicate an obstruction in the shared main pipe.

The unmistakable signs of a blocked main drain:

Several fixtures affected

The upstairs and downstairs toilets are both slow. The washbasin and shower drain poorly at the same time. This is the surest sign.

Water backing up between rooms

When you flush the toilet, water backs up in the shower or kitchen sink. The water is seeking another route because the main one is blocked.

Smells and abnormal sounds

Persistent sewage smell in the house. Gurgling or sucking sounds in the pipes when you flush.

Standing water outside

The external drain or inspection chamber overflows when you use water inside.

This is an emergency: waste water contains dangerous bacteria. Call a professional immediately.

What is the difference between a drain snake and hydro jetting?

A drain snake is a mechanical tool with a metal spiral that penetrates and extracts physical blockages (objects, roots). Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water (150-200 bar) to detach and flush away stubborn deposits (grease, limescale, sludge) from the pipe walls. The choice depends on the nature of the blockage.

Comparison of the two professional methods:

Electric drain snake
  • Mechanical penetration of the blockage
  • Extraction of stuck objects
  • Reach of 10-30 metres
  • Ideal for: toys, paper, roots
  • Price: €249 excl. VAT
Hydro jetting
  • High-pressure water (150+ bar)
  • Complete cleaning of pipe walls
  • Restores the original diameter
  • Ideal for: grease, limescale, sludge
  • Price: €349 excl. VAT

Our CCTV diagnosis determines the best method before intervention.

Are commercial drain unblocking products effective?

Commercial chemical drain unblocking products are largely ineffective on main drain blockages and dangerous for your pipes. They may partially dissolve organic matter but merely push the blockage further along. Their caustic compounds attack PVC joints and porcelain, and pose serious health risks from splashing.

Why you should avoid chemical products:

Risk of making things worse

The liquid product bypasses the blockage without dissolving it, then accumulates behind and compacts it further. The problem gets worse.

Pipe corrosion

Caustic soda and sulphuric acid attack PVC pipe joints and toilet porcelain. Over time, this causes leaks.

Health hazard

If splashed during unblocking, these products cause severe chemical burns to skin and eyes. Risk to children.

Water pollution

These products are not treated by water treatment plants and pollute the environment.

Advice: Use mechanical methods (drain snake, plunger) or natural ones (bicarbonate of soda). For a stubborn blockage, call a properly equipped professional.

How long does a main drain intervention take?

A main drain intervention typically takes between 1 and 2.5 hours. This includes CCTV diagnosis (15 min), unblocking with drain snake or hydro jetting (30-90 min depending on complexity), and verification tests (15 min). Blockages from roots or complex objects may take longer.

Breakdown of procedure and timings:

1. CCTV diagnosis (15-20 min)

Complete visual inspection of the pipe to locate the blockage and assess its general condition.

2. Preparation (10 min)

Laying down protection, setting up equipment, accessing the inspection chamber.

3. Intervention (30-90 min)

Electric drain snake: 30-60 min for most blockages. Hydro jetting: 45-90 min to thoroughly clean the pipe walls.

4. Verification (15 min)

Flow test, CCTV check to confirm the pipe is clear, site clean-up.

Special cases: Root blockages may require 3-4 hours and multiple passes. We inform you of the estimated time after the initial diagnosis.
